Alabama Senate Committee Approves Ban On Same Sex Marriages

A Senate committee unanimously approved a constitutional amendment Tuesday that prevents marriage licenses from being issued to two people of the same sex.

The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee approved the ban on gay marriages by an eight-to-nothing vote and it now goes to the full Senate for consideration. A similar bill, which defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, has passed a House committee and is pending in the House. The House bill calls for a statewide referendum on the issue to be held with party primaries in June 2006. Republican lawmakers have said they plan to attempt to amend the measure to hold the vote during the November second general election this year.

The sponsor of the Senate bill, Albertville Senator Hinton Mitchem, said his amendment calls for the referendum to be held during this year's general election. Mobile Senator Vivian Figures, voted for the amendment, but questions the need for the Legislature to deal with the issue.
