Two people are dead, after a murder-suicide at a mobile home in Haleyville early Thursday morning. Police say 41-year-old William Hubbard shot and killed his estranged wife, 31-year-old Loretta Hubbard, shortly after 4 a-m.
Haleyville Police Chief Kyle Reogus said after the shooting, William Hubbard left the residence and drove at a nearby campsite where he told two of the victim's relatives that she was ill and needed their assistance. Authorities said the two found Loretta Hubbard lying on a floor and called police. About two hours later, police officers confronted William Hubbard and ordered him to surrender, but he walked back inside the residence and shot himself in the chest with a .22 caliber rifle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the estranged couple had recently filed for divorce.
A judge approved the petition Wednesday.
