MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP)_Human rights attorneys representing state prisoners have been accused of advising inmates to refuse medical treatment and medication -- an allegation they strongly deny.
The accusations were made in a recent letter to the Southern Center for Human Rights by attorneys representing the Department of Corrections. The Atlanta-based Southern Center represents six plaintiffs named in a lawsuit against Hamilton prison in northwest Alabama, claiming negligent health care at the prison. The medical treatment claims are the most recent in a series of allegations exchanged since the lawsuit was filed in February. The prison system has been under fire over medical treatments and living conditions at three other prisons -- Limestone, Tutwiler and St. Clair -- and is making court-ordered improvements at those facilities. Corrections Department spokesman Brian Corbett said all inmates have the right to refuse medical treatment, but must sign a release form. Copyright 2005 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
