Alabama marking National Day of Prayer for hurricane victims

MONTGOMERY – Governor Bob Riley announced that a non-denominational service will be held at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery on Friday, September 16 in memory of the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

President Bush declared this Friday as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance and encouraged Americans and places of worship to mark the day with special services and observances. “Once again our nation turns to God for the strength, hope and healing that only He can provide. I ask all Alabamians to join Patsy and me in prayer this Friday. Pray for the victims, the rescuers, the survivors, and pray for our country,” Governor Riley said.

The service will begin at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) and the public is invited to attend.

Clergy leaders participating in the service will include:

  • The Reverend James E. Arnell of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church
  • Minister John Schmidt of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church
  • Rabbi Kenneth I. Segel of Temple Beth Or
  • Dr. Karl Stegall, Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Montgomery
  • Dr. Jay Wolf, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Montgomery

Hurricane victims and evacuees who fled the storm and are now in Alabama will also be recognized during the service. To assist hurricane victims in Alabama and evacuees from Mississippi and Louisiana, Governor Riley created Operation Golden Rule.

Operation Golden Rule is a state initiative to find long-term housing for people who lost their homes and to raise funds to cover the unmet needs of victims.

Contributions may be sent to the Alabama Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund at P.O. Box 1523, Montgomery, AL 36102.

Those seeking additional information may call toll-free 877-273-5018.

Governor Riley has also set up a website where individuals can sign up to volunteer with hurricane relief efforts. That website is http://www.servealabama.gov  .
