Sessions, accused of exploiting Katrina, defends estate tax cuts

WASHINGTON (AP)_Republican Senator Jeff Sessions says it would be "immoral" not to repeal the estate tax in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Others say however that the money would be better spent on the hurricane's poorer victims.

The Alabama senator spoke out Tuesday, but didn't elaborate on a magazine's allegation that he's trying to take advantage of the disaster.

An article on Time magazine's Web site reports that Sessions contacted his former law professor and left a message asking whether he knew any business owners who died in the hurricane.

Some have criticized the move, saying Sessions is trying to take advantage of the situation by finding a business owner to use as an example to advance his proposals.

Democratic National Committee spokesman Josh Earnest says Session should be looking to help Alabama workers instead of --quote-- "looking to take political advantage of a millionaire's tragic death."
