MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Riley says the state will provide assistance to laid off casino workers even though he considers the casinos illegal. Officials with the state Department of Industrial Relations says staff will be on hand this week to help workers file for unemployment compensation and other potential benefits.
DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A Dothan teenager who apologized for his involvement in two Dothan armed robberies will spend five years in prison for each offense. A Circuit Court judge sentenced 18-year-old Karey Godwin to serve 20 years in prison for each of the armed robberies but then suspended that sentence. The judge ordered Godwin to serve five years in prison for the charges.
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - A 55-year-old construction worker died after Auburn officials say he was crushed by a dump truck while directing heavy equipment on a construction site. Ronald Gary Taunton of Columbus, Ga., was killed in the accident yesterday.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama will get $1.5 million in federal funds to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, reduce obesity, and decrease smoking. The money is part of $119.5 million in community prevention and wellness awards handed out this month across the nation.
