It appears the state is set to renew a deal to keep the Gees Bend Ferry afloat.
Wilcox County plans to break ground on Tuesday for 2 new ferry terminals on some land the county bought from Auburn University. The county will use $500,000 of a $2 million grant to help pay for the new terminals. The county has agreed to let the state have the other $1.5 million in return for continuing the ferry contract.
On Thursday, the state ok'd the plan. The ferry was shutdown in 1962 forcing residents to make a one hour drive to Camden, the nearest town, instead of the 15 minute ferry ride. Federal funds paid for the ferry to re-open last summer.
