Over 100,000 Expected In Auburn For Iron Bowl Weekend

Updated:

Wounded and embarrassed, Auburn and Alabama limp into Saturday night's Iron Bowl. They won't be playing for national or Southeastern Conference titles or BCS bowl bids. What's at stake, is their seasons.

The 25th-ranked Tigers (7-4, 4-3) enter the game two weeks removed from an embarrassing loss at Georgia. The Crimson Tide (6-5, 4-3) is still crimson-faced after an humiliating loss to Louisiana-Monroe. The winner improves its bowl credentials and gets the modest distinction of finishing second in the SEC West behind top ranked LSU. The Tide might even wind up needing a win to assure itself of a postseason trip to cap Nick Saban's first season since up to 11 SEC teams could be bowl eligible.

Alabama will try to keep Auburn from extending its Iron Bowl winning streak to six years. It will be only the eighth time the teams have played at night out of 72 meetings, and only the ninth time both have entered coming off losses.

Auburn and Alabama haven't met on Thanksgiving weekend since 1992. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPN.

Auburn officials tell WSFA 12 News that they expect around 120,000 fans in Auburn for the nationally televised game. As a result of the large crowds, officials say some 10 law enforcement agencies will help watch over the area. Other extra security measures are also in place. As of 10pm Friday, Auburn officials say they have had no major problems with fans.

If you are heading to the Iron Bowl and don't want to walk to the stadium, Auburn does offer some transportation to the stadium. Buses begin picking up people 4 hours before kick-off and continue to run during the game and after.
