Interstate Reopens After Gasoline Tanker Wreck

Posted: Updated:

Macon County, Ala. (WSFA) -- Interstate 85 has reopened after a five hour shutdown, but traffic was still moving very slowly at last check.

State troopers shutdown both Northbound lanes of I-85 at exit 16 (Waugh) to clean up the wreck of an overturned tanker truck that was carrying gasoline.

Officials tell WSFA 12 News that the tanker truck rolled down the side of the ramp at exit 22 (Shorter) and came to rest between the exit ramp and the interstate.

The driver sustained only minor injuries in the accident.

Meanwhile, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, a HazMat team and other state agencies responded to the scene.

It's estimated the truck was carrying at least 4,400 gallons of gasoline and fire fighters could be seen hosing the wreckage with foam to prevent a fire.

Sand from Tuskegee was quickly brought in to contain the spilled fuel.

The accident is still under investigation.
