Three Major Exits Now Closed on I-65 North

Posted: Updated:

Montgomery, Al. (WSFA) -- The Alabama Department of Transportation Sunday closed three major on-ramps to Interstate 65 north as part of a massive makeover of the interstate.

The exits at the Southern Boulevard, Edgemont Avenue and Fairview Avenue will remain closed for at least a month.

ALDOT officials acknowledge this will be an inconvience to more than 140,000 people who travel up and down this part of I-65 daily, but add there's no other way around it.

The temporary closure is part of a $193 million deal to widen I-65 to six lanes from the River Bridge back to the Catoma Creek Bridge.

That is a distance of more than four miles.

Tony Harris with AlDOT tells WSFA 12 News the entire I-65 project should be wrapped up by October of 2009.

The DOT encouranges those commuters who typically use those off and on ramps to use alternative routes for the time being.
