Travel delays cause holiday headaches

Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) -- While last week, travelers easily found their way around the country, the scene Sunday was anything but a walk in the park.

Harsh weather meant holdups at many major airline hubs, including Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, delaying flights for hours.

"We checked right before we were coming and we were surprised to hear about the delay.  Then we tried to see if we could come later, they said we can't, we have to check in at our regular time," said Esther Erhman, on her way home from Atlanta to Baltimore.

Passengers in Montgomery--eager to go home--felt the shockwaves of the flight fiasco.

"[The woman at the counter says] she's not even sure if there's bad weather in Atlanta, but there was bad weather this morning and it just sort of delayed every flight through the day unfortunately," explained Ashley Delp, a New York City resident.

Though airlines obviously can't control the weather, travelers hope to make it home without the holiday headaches.

"I have to be at work at 8 o'clock [Monday] morning, so I do hope that I don't have a big delay," said Rosemarie Brasington of New Mexico.

Highways are just as bad in some spots.  More cars on the road means more accidents.  Travelers say it's all part of the adventure that is the holiday weekend.

"If you're going with a tight schedule, you might as well loosen up because anything can happen," Brasington said.

AAA estimates nearly 41 million travelers took to the skies, roads, and rails over the holiday weekend.
