OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - WSFA 12 News has confirmed that layoffs are coming to the Opelika BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing plant.
Tate Hoxworth, spokesman for Michelin North America, said the company is attempting to make production adjustments in a slowing economy and must reduce its inventory.
Hoxworth says "an indefinite layoff of fewer than 80 production employees" will go into effect on February 14. The plant employees close to 1,000 people.
He also adds that specific staffing needs are still being finalized and will be shared with employees when they become available.
When asked if more layoffs were possible Hoxworth didn't give a specific yes or no answer, only saying the company would continue to closely monitor market conditions and make adjustments.
On the issue of compensation, each worker laid off by the Opelika plant is eligible for state unemployment benefits. Hoxworth says details on the application process will be given to each of those affected.
