Fines handed down after basketbrawl

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A week after Montgomery made national headlines for a brawl during a high school basketball game, the Alabama High School Athletic Association is handing down fines to the two schools that were involved.

G.W. Carver High School, Valley High School and several players will literally pay as part of their punishment.

Carver High School will fork out $2,600 for its part in the malee. The boys basketball team is on "restrictive probation" and will not play in any 2009 tournament games. 

Carver Principal Gary Hall tells WSFA 12 News that as of right now, the team is only allowed to participate in regular season games and depending on review, the post-season ban CAN be lifted by the AHSAA.

Meanwhile, Valley High School will pay slightly less for its association with the brawl, $2,500. However, it could face additional penalties. Fourteen unidentified Valley players will have to pay $300 in restitution, though that fine could be reduced to $100 if they complete an online training course. Like Carver, Valley is on "restrictive probation" for 2009.

Valley Principal Larry Mquiston tells WSFA 12 News that his school, "Has a very good opportunity to have the ban on post season play lifted."

Both teams meet on February 19 at the AHSAA center in Montgomery, two days after the brawl, to make amends.

Alabama State University, who owns and maintains the Acadome where the brawl started, has pressed charges against eleven juveniles. Those charges include: assault, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, inciting a riot and failure to disperse.
