MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Attorney General Troy King's office presented evidence that Sherrie Phillips took a $1.8 million check from the estate of Cary Douglas Piper, who had no known heirs until recently.
The AG says Phillips put the funds into a person account, listing her own address and social security number on the account. She then withdrew $516,917.50
From January 22 to April 5 of 2008 Phillips wrote 10 checks from the account and paid:
$25,000 to her husband
$100,000 to her brother
$100,000 to herself
$60,000 for a Cadillac Escalade
$23,000 to a Ford dealer for her husband's vehicle
The Attorney General's office says it began an investigation at the Covington County probate office on April, 29 2008, serving a subpoena fo the files and records of the Piper estate.
The next day the AG's office says Phillips went to her bank and made the following actions:
Transfer of funds from her personal account back into a public funds account
deposited a check from her brother for $449,000
deposited a check from another brother for $25,000
deposited a check from her husband for $12,000
deposited a check from herself for $32,000
After her conviction, Phillips faces 2 to 20 years in prison and up to a $30,000 fine for each count.
