The chairman of the state Senate Rules Committee said he plans to seek a vote in the Senate next week on legislation that would regulate, tax and expand electronic bingo casinos statewide.
Democratic Sen. Lowell Barron of Fyffe says he plans for his committee to put the proposed constitutional amendment atop the Senate's work agenda for Tuesday or Thursday. The measure will need 21 of the 35 senators to pass.
The bill's sponsor, Democratic Sen. Roger Bedford of Russellville, calls the vote close. An opponent, Democratic Sen. Phil Poole of Tuscaloosa, agrees. He predicts proponents will either get exactly 21 votes or fall one vote short with 20.
