Saban preaches patience, suspends two

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Nick Saban is preaching patience for Alabama's starting contenders at quarterback and other key positions.

The Crimson Tide got a head start in position battles by practicing Friday before heading out on spring break.

Freshman Star Jackson and junior Greg McElroy are vying to replace John Parker Wilson at quarterback in the fall.

Saban said there's no pressing reason to have a clear-cut No. 1 passer when spring practices end.

Alabama is also seeking new starters at left tackle and tailback.

Saban said linebacker Prince Hall and Brandon Fanney have both been suspended for violating unspecified team rules.

He said Hall's suspension is indefinite and he won't participate in spring drills and that he's not sure when Fanney will return.
