Covering Dallas County: A community celebrates a new safe place

Burnsville, Ala. (WSFA) -- After a year in the making, The Burnsville storm shelter had it's official open house Saturday.

The shelter has been in action for the last two bouts of severe weather.

"The community is really excited," said EMA director Rhonda Abbott.  "We have to enforce the operations plan with the shelter we we've had no problem getting people to step up and volunteer. You know, I feel the community is going to wrap their arms around this, and they're going to take care of it, and they're going to use it!"

The shelter is located behind the Burnsville Volunteer Fire Department on Highway 14.
