Selma students win at C-SPAN competition

SELMA, AL., -- Allison Moore, Michelle Harris and Whitney Strong, eight graders at Selma Middle CHAT Academy, were announced 2nd Place winners of the C-SPAN 2009 StudentCam Competition. This year's theme was "A Message to the new President. What is the most urgent issue to address after taking office, and why?"

The three girls teamed up and submitted, Today's Special: No Money, Low Self Esteem, with a Side of Poor Education, a message about poverty and its effect on students. The girls followed the competition guidelines by analyzing an issue of national significance that included C-SPAN programming and offered different points of view.

This year C-SPAN received 921 videos from almost 2,000 students, representing 41 states, Washington, D.C., Guam and Egypt. The girls will share a $1,500 cash prize and their broadcasting teacher, Claire Compton who will receive $125 for digital video equipment.
