MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Senate has approved Birmingham businessman Raymond J. Harbert as an Auburn University trustee after holding up his nomination for one year.
The Senate voted 27-1 Tuesday to approve Harbert's selection. The vote allows Harbert to begin a seven-year term.
Auburn's trustee selection committee nominated Harbert last year, but the chairman of the Senate's Confirmations Committee never brought it to a vote because of concerns about a lack of diversity on the Auburn board.
The selection committee renominated the white business executive this year. The Confirmations Committee also got a new chairman, who pushed for Harbert's approval.
The former chairman, Democratic Sen. Myron Penn of Union Springs, cast the lone no vote Tuesday.
