MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A state Senate committee has approved a bill that would allow pet owners to get their dogs and cats vaccinated for rabies every three years instead of annually.
The vote Thursday by the Senate Health Committee sends the bill to the Senate for consideration.
The bill's sponsor, Republican Sen. Larry Dixon of Montgomery, said Alabama is the last state to require annual vaccinations.
All other states have gone to longer vaccination periods because of advances in the rabies vaccines.
Dixon's bill would also require rabies vaccinations for ferrets.
