HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Former state Rep. Sue Schmitz' conviction on federal fraud charges was temporarily forgotten as more than 200 Madison County residents lined up to honor her.
The Sue Schmitz Day event was Sunday afternoon at Sparkman Middle School.
The crowd included several state legislators.
Schmitz was a teacher at Sparkman High School from 1986 to 2002 and at Columbia High School from 2003 to 2006.
She had to give up her seat in the Legislature in February when she was convicted of using her influence as a lawmaker to get a job with the two-year college system and then doing little work.
A hearing is scheduled in federal court in Decatur Wednesday on whether she will have to forfeit property to repay $170,000 she made from the job.
