Alabama Senate committee approves gambling plan

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A proposed constitutional amendment to expand, tax and regulate electronic gambling across Alabama has won approval from a state Senate committee.

The Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee voted 4-1 Wednesday for the "Sweet Home Alabama" legislation sponsored by Democratic Sen. Quinton Ross of Montgomery.

Committee Chairman Bobby Singleton says he expects the Senate to take up the bill in a week or two.

The bill originally provided for electronic gambling in nine counties, but the committee voted to take out Calhoun and Walker counties.
