Legislative panel nixes state employee furloughs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A legislative committee has blocked a plan that would allow state agencies to furlough employees for up to 24 days a year.

The Legislative Council voted unanimously Thursday against a plan proposed by the State Personnel Board.

State Personnel Director Jackie Graham said layoff are the only option now for cash-strapped agencies, while furloughs would allow employees to keep their benefits and health insurance.

Committee members expressed concern about whether the plan would be used to discriminate against some employees.

It was opposed by the State Employees Association.
