CENTRE, Ala. (AP) - A Centre businessman has died after the single-engine plane he was flying clipped a home and crashed.
Cherokee County EMA director Beverly Daniel said Harley McGatha died early Sunday morning. His plane crashed into a home near the Centre Municipal Airport after it clipped a corner of the structure when taking off Saturday afternoon.
A family was inside the house but none of the occupants were injured.
McGatha was seriously injured and was taken to UAB Hospital's burn unit. Daniel said McGatha, president of Harley McGatha Construction, kept his plane at the Centre airport and was a "very experienced pilot."
