BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a 28-year-old man armed with a machete broke into a north Jefferson County house, strangled a kitten in front of two children and tried to rape a 27-year-old woman.
Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Randy Christian said Tuesday that the suspect, Randy Oneal Davidson, allegedly stole a vehicle owned by the victim's husband before he was captured by deputies at a truck stop.
Detectives planned to get warrants Tuesday against the man on assault, burglary, attempted rape, theft and animal cruelty charges.
Christian said Davidson had a lengthy criminal record and had been accused of taunting the woman about her mixed-race marriage.
He said Davidson fled when a school bus carrying her 9-year-old daughter stopped at the house Monday afternoon.
