State's first all-women federal prison

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Groundbreaking has been scheduled for the state's first all-female federal prison.

The prison will be built on 120 acres in southwest Pickens county near Aliceville and the groundbreaking will be held Wednesday morning.

State Rep. Alan Harper is Aliceville's director of economic development and said site preparation work has been under way for the new prison.

The prison will be part of the Federal Correctional Complex in Aliceville and will house 1,300 medium-security inmates and have 350 employees. It is set to open in 2011.

Harper said construction should cost about $185 million and involve 500 to 600 workers.
