MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Former Auburn football player Connie Frederick has passed away.
Frederick died Sunday in Georgia at age 61. He was responsible for a memorable play in Auburn history when he ran a fake punt 84 yards for a touchdown late in a lopsided win over Alabama in 1969.
It was the Tigers' first win over their arch rival since 1963.
The play is still tied for the fifth longest run from scrimmage in school history.
Frederick played wingback and punter for the Tigers from 1967-69.
The former Montgomery prep star won the Cliff Hare Award, the highest honor an Auburn male student-athlete can receive.
Frederick had starred in baseball, basketball and football at Lee High School in Montgomery.
