"Teacher of the Year" finalists include two locals

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Education announced the final four candidates for the "Alabama Teacher of the Year" award. Two of those finalists are right here in the River Region!

Yung Thi Bui-Kincer of Booker T. Washington Magnet School and Virginia Vilardi of Wetumpka High School are competing against teachers from Jefferson and Calhoun County school districts for the annual award.

"Congratulations to these four outstanding Alabama teachers," said Joe Morton, State Superintendent of Education. "To reach the final four in this comprehensive process is a true accomplishment. Choosing the 2009 Teacher of the Year from this outstanding group will be a challenging task for the state judging committee."

Each of the finalists will now go through an extensive interview with the state judging committee. The winner will be announced on May 13 in a live broadcast awards show called, The 2009 Alabama Stars in Education. You can watch that broadcast on Alabama Public Television.

The winner will go on to compete in the National Teacher of the Year Award.
