AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Several Confederate flags placed on the graves of Civil War soldiers in Auburn were removed by a black councilman, who called them symbols of racism and hatred.

The president of the Auburn Heritage Association, Mary Norman, says she was at her family's burial plot in Pine Hill Cemetery when Councilman Arthur Dowdell removed the small Confederate flag from her great-grandfather's grave Thursday afternoon.

Dowdell said he removed four flags from graves because the cemetery was decorated like a Ku Klux Klan rally.

Norman, who is white, said the United Daughters of the Confederacy placed the flags for Confederate Memorial Day on Sunday.
