Wiregrass remembers Headland Police Officer Dexter Hammond

Eufaula, Ala. (WSFA) - Hundreds of people attended the funeral for fallen Headland police officer Dexter Hammond.

He was killed in the line of duty last Friday.

Dexter Hammond spent his life protecting others and Tuesday hundreds gathered to remember his dedicated service.

Breaking the silence in the air was the roar of motorcycles escorting Hammond to his final resting place.

Close to a thousand people attended Hammond's funeral at the Eufaula Community Center.

A lifelong officer, Hammond spent 16 years in uniform.

"My prayers are with the family, all of Alabama mourns this terrible, terrible loss all of us hope there will be no more names to put on walls, but this is a tragic reminder of their sacrifice," said Alabama Attorney General troy King.

And those that new Hammond best say he will never be forgotten.  Hammond was laid to rest at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
