Editorial            Checkpoints                 4-30-09

Birmingham raised the roof recently when their crime numbers dropped 10%.

We tip our cap to them, but our crime stats in Montgomery are down more than 20%.

Checkpoints in various places throughout the city are clearly helping drive those numbers.

Drunk drivers are being stopped.

Many who are driving without a license or insurance are being cited.

Some who are travelling with stolen goods are being discovered.

The checkpoints are everywhere - from WynLakes to the west side.

There have been over 400 since they started in January.

Crime isn't down just because of these checkpoints.

More precincts, foot patrols, neighborhood watch groups - all are contributing to the crime decline.

But the checkpoints  help.

The proof is in the results.
