Flood waters engulf Montgomery's largest church

Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) -- The city's largest church was not spared from the fast moving flood waters on Thursday.

Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church lay in the path of rising water that quickly covered the Atlanta highway.  Then the waters topped the curb and moved inside into the main sanctuary and Wesley Hall.

"We've had flooding in church before, but never anything quite like this, " said Frazer UMC Communications Director Ken Roach.  "It was rapid. Water rushing in the front doors, definitely a flash flood."

Volunteers and staff came into the church to sweep and vacuum water off the carpets and pick machinery off the floor.

The flooding canceled Frazer's national day of prayer service, but the Jimmy Hitchcock Awards went on as planned.
