Covington Co. man found dead in house fire

COVINGTON CO., AL (WSFA) - The Covington County Sheriff's Department says it's looking into the undetermined death of an Odom Road resident after his body was found in a house fire. Odom Road is in the extreme northern portion of the county just short of the Crenshaw County line.

The investigation started just after 8am Thursday when a home health nurse dialed 911 to report the blaze.

When authorities arrived on the scene there was smoke rolling out of the house and carport. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found the homeowner, Travis Sasser, lying in a chair inside. He died of an undetermined cause.

Sasser's wife, suffering from smoke inhalation, was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to a Dothan hospital.

The Covington Co. D.A.'s office, State of Alabama Fire Marshall's Office, Covington Co. Coroner, and Alabama Dept.Of Forensic Science as well as numerous local agencies are working together on this case.
