MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Department of Archives and History will use a $500,000 donation from the Poarch Band of Creek Indians for new state history exhibits.
Robert R. McGhee, a council member for Alabama's only federally recognized tribe presented the gift in an April 28 ceremony at the archives department.
Archives spokesman Steve Murray said Thursday one section of a new gallery with seven exhibits will focus on a period in Alabama history that included the Creeks' contacts with the first settlers.
The exhibit, "This Is Our Land," covers the period from 1702 to 1819.
A date for completing the $10 million museum project that includes the redesign of all exhibits hasn't been set. Work began in 2002.
