ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) - When you think about some of the most amazing pieces of artwork in the U.S., the Statue of Liberty has to be right up there. The man who designed it did lots of other impressive works of art including the Bartholdi Fountain. It was made back in 1875 and eventually made it's way to a park in Washington, D.C. near the U.S. Capitol building. Now it's sitting on a lot in Alex City at a company called Robinson Iron.
So why is this priceless piece of art in Tallapoosa County. "We've cleaned the piping, done the repair work, and now rebuilding it," said Scotty Howell of Robinson Iron. "It's a great honor and a thrill to fix it, and it'll be even better to put it back."
Right now it's in pieces, but when it's put together it weighs more than 30,000 pounds. The crew a Robinson Iron will fix it up, take it back to the nations capital and then put it back together for the whole world to see. For the folks at Robinson Iron it's just another day on a job they truly love. "I've been in it 34 years now, it's a new challenge everyday."
The Bartholdi Fountain should be working and back in Washington, D.C. by this fall.
