MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A Washington County teacher convicted of enticing a former student for sex is still drawing a salary from the school system while she is serving time at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee, Fla.
Larry Moss, the school system's chief financial officer, said Charlene Schmitz has been paid $51,666 since her termination date on May 27,2008. He said the system also has paid another $19,270 in retirement contributions, Social Security taxes and fringe benefits.
The school system's efforts to fire her have been held up by an Alabama law that gives tenured teachers the right to challenge dismissals in front of an arbitrator. A hearing cannot be held until Schmitz's appeals and related state charges have been resolved.
