MPD releases May checkpoint results

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Montgomery Police Department held a total of 53 roadblocks in the month of May according to city officials.

Some citizens have complained that the roadblocks are illegal and are unfairly targeting minorities on the west side of Montgomery.

The police department refutes that claim and Thursday released a report indicating the locations of all 53 operations for the month.

Sixteen of the checkpoints were in the north precinct, there were another 18 in the south and east precincts. While there were more operations held on the west side of Montgomery, the numbers were not significantly higher. Just 19 checkpoints were held in that area.

Regardless, the Montgomery city council has requested an opinion from Attorney General Troy King's office to determine the legality of the operations.
