Covering Perry County: Large landfill wants to double its intake

Perry County, Ala. (WSFA) -- A large landfill in Perry county plans to double its daily intake. Arrowhead Landfill filed for a permit modification with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

The landfill, near Uniontown, accepts everything except hazardous materials: like industrial, commercial, and demolition waste. If the state approves, the landfill would go from 7,500 tons of trash a day to 15,000 tons of trash every 24 hours.

If you do the math, that's 30-million pounds of trash a day; 7.8 billion pounds a year.

The county commission chairman backs the plan.

The landfill is a huge revenue producer. The county gets $1.00 a ton which is about $15,000 a day at full capacity.

The public has until the middle of July to contact the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to arrange a hearing.
