Baby left in sweltering car, mother arrested

GREENVILLE, AL (WSFA) -- An off-duty sheriff rescued a child from a hot car and the mother has been arrested.

Greenville police tell WSFA 12 News officers responded to a call at a local Wal-Mart concerning a child locked inside a vehicle.

Officers who arrived on the scene reported seeing the front passenger window of vehicle knocked out and a man holding a child. The man told authorities he was the one who made the call.

Officer's say the off-duty sheriff noticed the child sweating and busted the window out with his baton.

Thirty-minutes later, officers found and arrested the mother of the child. She's being identified as 28-year-old Valla Leigh Furr of Luverne.

Officers charged her with endangering the welfare of a child.

The one-year-old child was transported to a local hospital. The baby has since been released into the father's custody.
