MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - As the Fourth of July approaches, the city of Montgomery is sending out a reminder that fireworks are illegal inside the city limits.

Unless you have a permit from fire officials, fireworks should not be on your list of things to do this Independence Day.

"It is unlawful for any person to possess, store, offer for sale, sale at retail, use or explode any fireworks within the Police Jurisdiction of the City of Montgomery, Alabama, unless a permit has been obtained from the fire officials," said MPD spokesman Major Huey Thornton.

Only licensed operators will be given permits.

Thornton says the department will respond to calls related to violation of the fireworks ordinance.

Those caught with fireworks could face fines of up to $500.
