Board Names New Superintendent

MONTGOMERY, Ala. The Montgomery County Board of Education has named Barbara Thompson as the system's new superintendent. The vote came in a meeting held this afternoon at the MPS Central Office.

"We are very fortunate to have found such an outstanding educator to lead our system," said MPS Board President Beverly Ross. "I believe she will bring the energy and focus to Montgomery that will unite the board and the community in our work for our children."

Thompson is superintendent of the New Glarus, Wisconsin school district. She also served as a teacher, principal and central office administrator for the Madison Public Schools; as a college instructor, and as a Fulbright Teacher Intern in Japan.

Thompson is a candidate for a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy from the University of Wisconsin - Madison expected to be awarded this summer. She holds a master's degree in behavioral and learning disabilities from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and a bachelor's in psychology from Spelman College.

Details of her contract will be discussed over the next few days. A start date has not yet been determined. Interim Superintendent Clay Slagle will continue to serve until she begins her duties.
