Republicans Pick Up Seat From Democrats In State House Special Election

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Republican Phil Williams of Huntsville has defeated Democrat Jenny Rhodes Askins of Toney in a special election for a seat in the Alabama state House.

Unofficial returns show Williams, the 49-year-old co-founder of Synapse Wireless, capturing about 60 percent of the vote in the Madison County district. Turnout was light. The 39-year-old Askins is a Madison County voter registrar. Williams and Askins were seeking the seat formerly held by Democratic Rep. Sue Schmitz, who lost it in February when she was convicted of felony fraud charges.

The Democratic advantage over Republicans in the House will be reduced to 59-44 with two vacancies.
