Gee's Bend ferry receives $1.4M grant for upgrade

WASHINGTON (AP) - Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says Wilcox County will receive more than $1.4 million in federal stimulus money to improve ferry service between Gee's Bend and Camden.

LaHood announced Tuesday that the grant to upgrade the Gee's Bend Ferry was among $60 million in grants to ferry operations in 19 states. The Gee's Bend funds will be used to upgrade ferry lines and build a new terminal in Camden.

The ferry, which resumed operations in 2006 after they were stopped in 1962, carries people and vehicles across the Alabama River between Camden and the isolated community of Gee's Bend.
