187th Fighter Wing departs for Iraq

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - More members of the 187th Fighter Wing stationed in Montgomery are heading to Iraq.

Family, friends and supporters filled the hanger at Dannelly Field Thursday for a ceremonial send off to the latest Alabama Air National Guard unit deploying overseas.

The 200 members will join 30 others from their unit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

For many of the troops this will be their second or even third trip to the region.

For Adam Weaver it's the fourth trip. "It's tough every time," he says.

Family members staying stateside don't find it any easier. Just ask Holly Bryan and her children. "Today is always the worst day," she says as her husband Mark readies to leave.

She finds comfort in knowing technology allows him to communicate more with his family than it used to though.

The men and women of the 187th will fly the F-16C Falcons which provide aerial support to coalition forces.

They'll remain in Iraq until the end of September.
