Mayor plans unpaid business tax collections

Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) -- In the midst of budget hearings, the capital city is also dealing with issues brought on by uncollected business license taxes.

Mayor Todd Strange says there are currently $1.5 million in uncollected business and sales tax in the city. He says there are two options available. Either take the unpaying business to municipal court or put a padlock on their front door. The city is looking for other options.

"What we want to do is expand the taxpayers bill of rights to allow us to expand our capabilities to get after some assets with liens that have a higher probability for collection," said Strange.

Amnesty is another consideration the mayor is mulling over for business owners who are late paying their fees and fines.
