Gov. Riley signs "Silver Alert" law

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - It's official! Alabama now has an emergency notification for the missing elderly. Governor Bob Riley signed the "Silver Alert" bill into law on Friday.

Here's how it works, when a loved one goes missing the family must call police first. Officers then alert the media. WSFA 12 News and other stations would then distribute that information on the news and on the web.

"Sometimes the people who built the greatest generation need a little extra help, and this is one way we can make sure as a state agency to make sure that if and when something happens to them, the state can take care of them," said Gov. Riley.

Unlike the "Amber Alert," the senior alert would only go to the immediate, local area where they are missing.
