OPP, AL (WSFA) - A tragic story out of the Wiregrass as news of the drownings of twin toddlers is confirmed.

Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks and investigators responded to the E-911 call Wednesday evening at a home on Weaver Place Road North. When they arrived EMS workers were already performing CPR on the twins.

The children, who have not been identified, were rushed to Opp Mizell Emergency Room where workers continued efforts to revive them. One of the victims died a short time later, and the other was taken by Life Flight helicopter to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Officials confirm the second toddler died Thursday.

"This is a tragic situation. I appreciate the tremendous outpouring of effort and concern from our community and citizens for this family...," Sheriff Meeks said Thursday morning.

Investigators believe the drownings were accidental, and family members did everything possible to revive the twins.

The sheriff says additional information is being limited out of respect for the family.
