Tide's Cody tries to expand role, shrink waistline

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Terrence Cody wants to be more than a run-stopper.

Alabama's massive nose guard has lost some 15 pounds from his massive frame during the offseason and hopes to shed another 10 or so. The 6-foot-5 Cody weighed in at about 355 pounds when the Crimson Tide opened fall camp on Thursday, same as in the spring.

His presence in the middle helped Alabama forge the nation's No. 2 run defense.

But when it came time for third down and passing situations, Cody typically headed to the bench. He was credited with only half a sack last season.

Coach Nick Saban said if the Tide started the season today, Cody would still not be in on third downs. But Saban said Cody has made some progress.
