Special Session summary - Day 1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Monday, the 1st day of a special session:


-Listened to the reading of Gov. Bob Riley's call for the special session.

-Speaker Seth Hammett officially recognized newly elected Rep. Phil Williams, R-Huntsville, who was elected last month in a special election. SENATE

-Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom gaveled Senate to order to begin special session. AGENDA

-Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee meets at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in room 727 at the Alabama Statehouse to consider a bill to extend some unemployment benefits.

-House Jefferson County Legislation Committee meets at 10 a.m. Tuesday in room 622 to consider bill levying .5 percent occupational tax for Jefferson County.

-House Commerce Committee meets at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in room 621.

-Senate meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday and the Senate at 5 p.m.


"It really depends on if everybody has the right attitude to figure out a way to get this resolved." - Gov. Bob Riley, commenting on whether he believes a special session to resolve Jefferson County financial crisis will be a success.
