MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A Montgomery man is dead after being stabbed and shot on a city sidewalk.

The homicide happened around 1:45am Saturday at 122 E. Woodland Drive.

The victim, 28-year-old Ossie Sanders, Jr. of Montgomery, was lying on the sidewalk unresponsive when medics arrived on the scene. They pronounced him dead within minutes.

Investigators say Sanders was with a woman who was apparently trying to buy drugs. The seller, interested in more than the drug money, tried to steal the woman's purse and Sanders confronted him.

Sanders and the seller weren't alone for long, however. According to investigators a group of 10 to 15 people gathered and a fight broke out.

When the fight ended Sanders was lying on the ground, suffering from stab wounds to the head and chest. His wounds appeared to come from a sharp object consistent with a screwdriver. Someone also pulled a gun and shot him once in the chest.

The suspects fled the scene on foot, bicycles and in a white car.
